Today is the “International Day of the Girl Child.” Approximately 49.6 percent of the world’s population is female; around 3.52 billion. As the father of a young woman, I try diligently to teach her how not to be a victim. She is strong, smart and focused, but I still worry, like so many dad’s of daughters. I also have a young son. I’ve raised him to know how wrong it is to perpetuate behaviors that although may have been acceptable are no longer and serve only to continue the systemic victimization and preying on women, physically and mentally. Perhaps if we focused more on teaching our sons not to be predators, we could spend less time worrying and teaching our daughters not to be prey.
