I have a dream…

I have a dream… And in my dream, in a town somewhere, in a High School like most any other, it is early in the morning on the first day of the school year… All of the schools’ students and staff are gathered in a darkened gymnasium and the mood is that of a pep rally. There is loud, hard-driving music, spotlights and fog machines just like you’d see before the basketball team enters into an NBA opening night. The students in the gym are all cranked up and excited, much in the same way they would be just prior to “The Big Game.”  There is an overwhelming sense of anticipation and the very air in the gym is electrified. Suddenly over the gymnasium loudspeaker, one of those amazing voice-over voices, deep and resonant, begins to call the faculty,  by name, one by one, onto the gym floor… each one exactly as they would call the stars of that same NBA team onto the floor just before the starting jump ball. “Now; returning for his 10th year teaching Literary Analysis & Composition, Jo Smith!” And the crowd goes wild as Jo runs onto the floor!!! The voice-over continues with “Now, in her fifteenth year teaching Algebra I; Mary Jones,” as Mary runs onto the floor next to Jo. Once more, the crowd goes even wilder!!! Continuing on, “Welcome now to the floor, educator extraordinaire, in her twenty-fifth year teaching Music Appreciation, Susan Murphy.”  And the crowd roar builds with each introduction, as they work themselves up into an ever-increasing frenzy, as the voice-over announces each of the “Key Players” onto the gymnasium floor until finally, when all have come to the floor, with music blaring and spotlights circling, the “Team” of teachers stand and received the overwhelming outpouring of the thronging student body and staff as they all prepare to begin yet another school year… Yes, this is my dream. In a society where that type of outpouring is reserved for athletes, I realize that my dream is far-fetched… However, if society were to understand that our Teachers are the most essential professionals there are to the very well-being off society itself, nothing less than what I see in my dream would be the appropriate response… I continue to believe that… and I continue to dream…
