Hypocrite is a Greek word that means “actor;” someone playing a role rather than being “real.” And any truly great actor will tell you that to excel in any role they must find the character within themselves and make that “false self” into a “true self” in the context of the “play.”
You see, the key word is play. In the words of the bard, “the play is the thing.” The actor knows that in the context of the play, the action is admittedly false. The difference is that the actor’s intention is to openly and honestly play the role where the hypocrite’s intention is to secretly and dishonestly play you.
