“Both sides so blinded by their fear and hate of each other that they couldn’t see they were all fighting for the same thing.” ~ Brom, The Child Thief. I think this says so much… The Majority Governing Party and The Loyal Opposition; it has worked for so long…
There are strident and fearful voices a plenty. There are those who would work their will for self-gain and personal aggrandizement… But do not underestimate the strength, durability and truly “good” nature of the American Zeitgeist; the ideals and beliefs that motivate the actions of the masses. We get things wrong along the way, but we have historically been on the side of right. We have long acted in ways that were more egalitarian than totalitarian and while we rush to a good spectacle, we tire of them soon enough.
We truly do know what is right… after all, we are a nation that began by many who had been done wrong and we have spent the last several centuries helping others get things right; doing right; and standing up for what is right even when the voice of right is overpowered by those who are wrong.
We are the world’s child prodigy; the precious child that has earned everyone’s pride and everyone’s ire at one time or another… and yet the world holds out hope for us, so we must also. We are truly “the shining city on the hill” that many have spoken of. The world beats a path to our door because of our national “Brand Promise” proffered by the words “We The People.”
But every now and again, the shining city on the hill becomes tarnished and must be polished just like anything forged in fire, made of fine metal and possessing great value. So, if there is anything to “American Exceptionalism” it is in that role for us in world. Our nation is a dream that many hold and will never know. We, the few blessed by fate and born here can easily take for granted our good fortune and forget that… But we do so at the peril of our world as we know it. We, America, are the hope expressed by the human spirit. That role comes with great responsibility not to be taken lightly…and I believe we will continue in that role. I have faith in us… “We The People.”
